Getting Juiced! Day 3

I thought this 7 day juice fast was shaping up to be a breeze but I was sorrily mistaken last night.  The green drink at dinner (Day 2) was less than enjoyable.  I managed to get through it but then as the night went on the hunger pains really started to get the best of me.  I headed to bed earlier than normal with a slight headache.

I normally suffer from migraines every few months but this was one of those headaches you get when you haven't eaten for a long time and your body is begging for something with some substance to it.  It made my attempt to get a good night's sleep pretty miserable as the next couple of hours was spent tossing and turning.  I'm hoping that's just part of the detoxing phase.  It's usually the first 2-3 days where people experience any "withdrawal" symptoms from what I've seen.

Luckily, I woke up this morning without the headache and no pressing hunger pains.  I'm beginning to love my mornings.  I feel the best during these times.  Now on to today's menu...

Day 3

Breakfast

Apple, Pear, and Strawberry Juice
-  1 green apple
-  2 pears
-  1 1/4 cup strawberries

The building blocks...

The finished project....

This drink was a welcome start to the morning especially after last night.  It was very refreshing!  I love strawberries and give this drink two thumbs up from me.

Brunch Snack

Since I worked today and had to be up at 5:30 am I had a hard time making it to lunch without something to coat my stomach.  And I work in a hospital setting so it's not exactly easy to haul my juicer or blender in and disrupt the work environment.  So I opted for the closest commercial version of a juice/smoothie mix.  This Naked drink really hit the spot even though it's still "processed" in some way.  All natural ingredients and no added sugar however.

Lunch

Blueberry - Peach Smoothie
-  1 cup frozen blueberries
-  2 cups frozen peach slices
-  Handful of collard greens
-  1 - 1.5 cups almond milk
-  1 tablespoon ground flaxseed

This smoothie wasn't the greatest.  I've definitely done better in my day.  I made it before work and put it in an insulated thermos mug and then stuck it in the freezer right away when I got in to work.  If I had to do it again I'd use only 1 cup of frozen peaches and substitute with strawberries or blackberries.

Also... that nagging headache from the night before hit me hard once again during mid-afternoon.  Not a pleasant experience and I really feel for those who go from a Standard American Diet to straight juicing. I'm sure they have many more "withdrawal" symptoms from a toxic diet.  Like I mentioned before I eat a very clean and nutritious plant-based diet but I'm still feeling the effects of no food.

Dinner

All Green Drink
-  1 head romaine hearts
-  3 handfuls kale
-  3 handfuls spinach
-  1 bunch parsley
-  2 celery stalks
-  1 piece ginger (thumbsize)
-  1/2 lemon

Before...

And after...

This wasn't easy to get down but it was easier than the mean green drink I had on day 2 for dinner.  I think the lemon and ginger definitely helped soothe the stomach and taste buds with this recipe.  It's definitely the most power packed drink I had all day but also the least enjoyable.

Evening Snack

Berry & Greens Smoothie
-  1 1/2 cups frozen strawberris
-  1/2 cup frozen blueberries
-  Handful of collard greens
-  1/2 cup 100% pomegranate juice
-  1 cup almond milk
-  3 pitted dates

This was delicious!  I'm hoping it holds me over until the morning too.  The last couple of nights have been rough ignoring my hunger pains but I have faith this antioxidant rich smoothie will keep me happy and hopefully help ward of that headache that attacked me last night and this afternoon.

Overall day 3 has been very trying.  The headache really knocked me hard and I didn't get as much sleep last night because of it.  I'm hoping tomorrow brings a better outcome.  Wish me luck!

  1. It's very interesting to follow your journey. No way I could make it on a juice fast. Have enough trouble just trying to eat sensible meals and very limited snacking. Keep strong...
